Workplace Futures

What’s next for the workplace? New ideas are proposed every day as our understanding of the pandemic shifts and expectations evolve. In the midst of a rapidly changing situation, we continue to believe that the workplace is a valuable tool for organizations. It provides a much-needed place to collaborate face-to-face, supports different employee workstyles, and acts as an anchor for corporate culture. But we recognize that our designs for physical offices must pivot to accommodate new behaviors and protocols brought on by the 2020 global health pandemic.

In this session, we will explore new research, ideas, and strategies for our “next normal” workplace environments from across Perkins and Will’s studios.

What you'll learn

Connecting “how we work” to “where we work” is part of Perkins and Will’s design DNA. While working from our homes for the past six months, we have grown to understand this DNA on an even deeper level. We have all had to find new ways of accomplishing our work while maximizing connection, productivity, and creativity through virtual collaboration tools. These lessons learned will introduce new paradigms and behaviors that will direct the spaces we create to accommodate a variety of workstyles.

Workstations and collaboration areas in offices may look different, but their role in supporting employees and their workstyles endures. The crucial link between these changing physical spaces and an organization’s talent is the virtual toolkit that empowers employees to choose the work environments that best support them and their work.

Key takeaways:

•

Learn how technology, autonomy, and trust were the key success factors during our WFH experience and identify the role these three factors will play as we return to and re-shape our workspaces.

•

Consider those mindset shifts for office workers and how those attitudes and preferences will drive new ideas around office location and workplace needs.

•

Outline scenarios and planning opportunities that organizations can consider to support a hybrid workforce.

•

Explore a Change Management Approach that seeks to prevent backslide to ‘old norms’ and advance ideas that could elevate our work experience

Sound Off

This session explored the importance of acoustics as we re-occupy our office spaces, and  solutions to consider for creating an environment that will allow for collaboration with fellow colleagues - on and off technology platforms – as well as offer quiet spaces for focus work. If you missed the Sound Off! webcast you can watch the recording here.

Can I Touch That Surface?

In the midst of a global pandemic, our concerns about cleanliness are at an all-time high. Many are aware of approved cleaning protocols, but new questions arise daily about antimicrobial products and UV light sterilization. As we become more aware of viral transmission, our instincts might encourage us to explore every strategy and product that will disinfect the surfaces we touch every day. This session identified best practices for ensuring that our shared office surfaces do not become a source for viral transmission, while encouraging caution in rapid adoption of untested products and procedures. If you missed the webcast you can watch the recording here.
